Class Topics This Term
What’s happening in class? Spring 2 2021
In Nursery this half term our topic is Traditional Stories and Fairy Tales. We will be focussing on a different book each week and doing activities linked to that story, such as making porridge for Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Within some of these stories we will also look at signs of Spring, talking about plants growing and baby animals. We will continue to learn new sounds in phonics, as well as revisit the ones from last half term. The sounds we will cover are s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g and o. In maths, we will continue to work on our counting skills, including counting things that can’t be touched, such as actions and sounds. We will also look at ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ by comparing groups of objects.
This term we are continuing to recap our phase 3 sounds and are now focussing more on reading and writing words that are part of a sentence. We are learning to write sentences and to read and understand them. In maths we are learning about number to 10 and are focussing on representing ways these numbers can be made out of smaller numbers. We will also be learning about the language we use to describe position and 2D and 3D shapes. Our topic this half term is minibeasts and we will be watching our very own caterpillars grow and turn into butterflies.
This term, we will continue our focus on developing the children’s phonics and reading fluency. During our English lessons we will use and enjoy several books to help children improve their sentence building, grammar and vocabulary skills. We will consolidate the children’s understanding of numbers up to 20 before exploring shapes, patterns, length and height whilst our topic work will allow the children to investigate what caused the Great Fire of London. It’s going to be fun!
In phonics this half term, we will be carrying on with adding suffixes onto words ending in y. We will focus specifically on er and est. In addition, the class will be looking at the /l/ sound spelt il, al and el. Our English lessons will be focusing on dinosaur poems. We will be using commands, exclamations, statements and questions to write our own dinosaur poem. In maths, we will start by going back to the length chapter. The class will be measuring objects in metres and use their understanding of metres to answer word problems. We will move onto measuring and comparing the volume of water in millilitres and litres. Our topic this half term is machines. We will be exploring toy cars and use this to design and make our own toy cars.
This half term in our mathematics lessons, year 3 will be focusing on measurement and its varieties. To begin with we are going to focus on time, telling the time to the minute, and converting a digital clock into an analogue clock. From here, we will look at mass and volume, using different scales to support our understanding. In English, we will look at explanation texts and how they differ from a non-chronological report before moving onto another look at a traditional tales and a variety of different poems. In our topic lessons we are looking at superheroes. We will look to create our own superhero and their powers, a villain to our story and a setting. Finally, in PE we are looking to get outside and start playing some new sports, including a variation to my favourite sport, rugby.
This term is our ‘Shakespeare’ term! Children will research the society, health and medical practises of Tudor Britain during the Elizabethan era. They will explore Shakespeare’s Macbeth in literacy, while learning reading techniques such as prediction, drawing inferences, clarification and summary. They will have an opportunity to write poetry and explore persuasive writing, letter writing, newspaper article writing, and play scripts. Maths will continue to focus on division of 3-digit and 4-digit numbers leading to the application of learned methodology in problem solving.
In literacy this term we are focussing on the science fiction genre and using it to improve many areas of our writing, including complex sentences, speech, prepositional phrases and use of similes and metaphors. For numeracy, our main foci will be on converting units of measure, solving word problems and understanding how to use fractions of number to solve real life problems. Our topic is Explorers and this will include the history of the Shang Dynasty, various musicians, navigation and problem solving.
